Deal allows free music from Internet
from baltimoresun.com
Music fans for the first time will be able to download free, legal copies of songs from a major record label under a deal announced yesterday by Universal Music Group.
The experiment in advertising-supported music marks a significant shift for an industry that has spent years fighting to stop global online piracy and was viewed as slow to embrace the potential of the Internet.
Universal's agreement with SpiralFrog will grant free, unlimited access to the hundreds of thousands of songs in the label's catalog, including such acts as Kanye West and U2.

Alternatives to iTunes Expand Online Music Offerings
Mac and iPod users looking for alternatives to the iTunes Music Store can find them.
One good example is eMusic (shame about the goofy clip art at the site's home page).
Unlike most other download services which use an incompatible DRM format, eMusic sells completely unprotected MP3 files which work perfectly in iTunes and will play on an iPod. Their basic service gives you 40 downloads a month for $9.95. Unlike other subscription services, if you cancel your subscription your music will still work. Unfortunately their music selection is very limited, although they have a decent selection of indie artists & international music.
Daytrotter's free music offers site for bored ears
I first heard of Daytrotter by way of Wired, and what I read convinced me I had to wander over and check it out. What an incredible concept. I'll let the Daytrotters describe it. Read this, and then get over there and check out the fresh sounds of bands laying down fast tracks between gigs. Awesome!
"Most bands touring in the upper half of the US drive on I-80 on their way to or from Chicago. We get them to stop off and do a live session of four songs at Futureappletree Studio 1, often using our collection of vintage instruments. The tracks are analog recordings, only converted to digital format for the purpose of transmission to you. These are the Daytrotter Sessions, and they’re available exclusively through Daytrotter.com—one featured band and four new songs each week."
Download class for yoga on the go
This story by Deborah Netburn about a cool new yoga website appeared recently in the Baltimore Sun.
My stiff neck, achy lower back and super-tight hips all indicated that a trip to the yoga studio was past due, but my in-laws were in town for the weekend and a class seemed out of the question. Between the traffic and the lack of parking, a 1 1/2 -hour yoga class takes 2 1/2 hours of my time. Could I really leave my in-laws from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. - prime brunch time - on a Saturday morning? I didn't think so.
How to make a fitList
Interval running iTunes playlist
Interval runner Jeff Welch developed a script which creates an iTunes playlist in which songs stop and start at timed intervals so he knows when to switch from running to walking without checking his watch.
The script only works on Windows with iTunes, and it inserts a little DING! noise between songs signalling you to switch gears. Sync it to your iPod and you’re ready to run, no watch required. Read more:
