I've personally been marathon-training for a few months now and let me tell you, when you start getting to a point where your long runs starts to exceed 10 miles/16 km, you really feel the need to explore new routes; unfortunately, doing so while still being able to easily track your workout progress and overall routine can be a real challenge. I've personally resorted to a specialized fitness watch from Polar, but if you own PocketPC/GPS hardware, MySportTraining can provide a wide range of information for a lot less than those pricey commercialized alternatives. One of its coolest features is the ability to view your routes afterwards via Google Maps.

"Track your fitness and workouts using the GPS technology, and find out at any moment how far and how fast you're doing! If your Pocket PC is equipped with a GPS receiver (either internal or external), MySportTraining GPS allows you record the duration, distance, pace, ascent (altitude gain) and visualize the route of your workouts, without having to purchase additional sport tracking equipment. Simply turn your GPS receiver on and start tracking your workouts! Ideal for casual or competitive walking, hiking, running, road cycling, mountain biking, kayaking, golfing, skiing, etc... Then you can visualize the route you went through, either using MySportTraining GPS' integrated route viewer or via Google Maps!"
